DESCRIPTION/MICROSCOPIC FINDINGS/COMMENTS:
Microscopic Description:
Sections of oral mucosa are examined. There is focally extensive
ulceration of the mucosa. Hyperplasia of the remaining mucosa is
seen. There is active fibroplasia and inflammation in the submucosa.
The submucosa is infiltrated with moderate numbers of lymphocytes,
plasma cells and neutrophils. Microorganisms are not observed.
Microscopic Findings:
Moderate, chronic-active, ulcerative, fibrosing, lymphoplasmacytic
stomatitis.
Comment:
The oral lesion is inflammatory. Bacterial infection may play a role,
but may not be completely responsible for intractable stomatitis.
Diagnostic features of immune-mediated stomatitis were not identified.
However, after other possible causes are eliminated, perhaps an
immune-mediated component might be assumed.
